Meet the Vikings

When did the Vikings arrive?

The first Viking raids were recorded in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles and other manuscripts during the eighth century.
The First Viking Raids Recorded:
787 Raid on Portland in Dorset

793 Raid on monastery at Lindisfarne in Northumberland
795 Raids on monasteries in Ireland  
799 Viking raids on Frankia in North France  

Some Vikings settled in Scotland and Ireland. Other Vikings continued to raid and invade England until King Alfred the Great made an agreement in AD886. This agreement gave north and east parts of England to the Vikings. This area became know as the Danelaw. Vikings then settled in England.

Vikings continued to settle and attack England until AD1066.
