Meet the Vikings

Viking Life - Games and Leisure

Board and Dice Games

The Vikings played board games, like Hnefatafl and Nine Men's Morris. Wooden game boards have been found in Scandinavia and in Britain.

In fact, the Vikings played the same sort of board games as the Anglo-Saxons. They also played dice games and gambled like the Anglo-Saxons.

Sagas and Story Telling

The Vikings are well known for their stories, called Sagas. These were written down hundreds of years after the Viking period. However the stories survived because they continued to be told to people over the years. Telling stories at feasts and in the evening was probably one of the main sources of entertainment. Bards would travel from place to place telling these stories and gathering new stories.

The Vikings also played music on instruments like the bone flute and the lyre. (Find out more about Viking music, their musical instructments and hear some examples)
