Coin of Alfred - head side

This coin is known as a silver penny and is made of silver. It is about the size of a modern five pence coin .

We known this coin was made in the time of King Alfred because the inscription on it says "AELFRED REX" which means "King Alfred". Can you read this on the picture?

On this side of the coin Alfred is shown wearing a laurel-wreath on his head.

From the other side of the coin we know the name of the moneyer who made the coin, Tilevine. It says on the coin "TILEVI NEN" (The final letters "ON" mean "from").

We also know that the coin was made in London because the image in the middle between the two crosses actually says "LONDI" - this meant London.

Can you now read these inscriptions?

What does this coin tell us about King Alfred?

It shows us that King Alfred granted a moneyer in London the right to make coins in his name and that he controlled London.

The crosses also show us he was a christian king. Whereas the laural wreath on his head suggests he saw himself almost like a Roman Emperor.
