Spearhead from Abingdon, Oxfordshire

Spearhead from Abingdon (AN1934.234)

This spearhead was excavated from a grave (no. 89) in the Anglo-Saxon cemetery at Abingdon in Oxfordshire.

The grave was that of a man and contained a number of artefacts.

Other objects found in the grave included:

  • 2 iron nails
  • iron knife
Knife found at Abingdon, Oxfordshire (AN1934.233)
Bucket rim found at Abingdon (AN1934.231)
  • piece of the rim of a bucket
Roman pottery from Abingdon (AN1934.232)
  • piece of Roman pottery found near the grave

These finds suggest this man would fight when necessary, because of his spear, but he did not have sword and shield so he was not an elite warrior. He carried a knife like most free Anglo-Saxons and he was buried with a bucket, from which he may have drunk when he was alive.

The piece of pottery nearby suggests that the Romans lived somewhere near this site before the Anglo-Saxons arrived. The Anglo-Saxons sometimes reused Roman pottery for other purposes, such as gaming pieces.
