The loomweight from Sutton Courtenay in Oxfordshire is one of 15 loomweights which were excavated from one of the houses (House 20) found on the site between 1920s and 1930s.

From this plan of the house, we can see where these loomweights were found (marked as rings on the plan). We can see that they were mostly found together (see the right side of the picture). This suggests that this was the location where a loom once stood in this house. |

Other finds from this house included a spindle whorl, a lead disc (which may have been a spindle whorl), some pottery fragments and sheep bones (which may have been used as bobbins for winding thread onto). What do these objects tell us about this house?All these finds suggest this building was used for making textiles, particularly weaving and spinning. |
