Buckles from Wallingford, Oxfordshire

Skeleton and objects found in grave 8 Wallingford

The grave (grave no. 8) of an Anglo-Saxon girl, who was about 12 years old, was excavated at Wallingford in Oxfordshire on 24 November 1936.

This girl was buried with two buckles (AN1938.1206-7) laying on her waist, suggesting she was wearing a belt.

The belt also seems to have had some bronze fittings (AN1938.1208a-c) placed on it. This picture shows one, the rest are in the picture below.

The girl was also buried with an iron knife (AN1938.1209), which was found laying beside her right hip. This was probably worn suspended from her belt in a sheath.

The final object found buried with the girl, laying beside the knife, was an iron purse mouth or fire steel. This suggests she also had a pouch or purse suspended from her belt.
