Saucer Brooches

Pair of saucer brooches from Abingdon Oxfordshire

These brooches get their name from their shape. They were usually decorated on the flat surface and had a sloped edge.

Click here to find out more about the brooches in the picture.

The styles of decoration on these brooches varied over time and across the country (as can be seen in these pictures), but it seems spirals and stars were particularly popular in Anglo-Saxon Oxfordshire.

Saucer brooches were usually worn in matching pairs. They were most popular in the fifth and sixth centuries in southern England, although they were still worn in the seventh century.
