Annular Brooches

Drawing of annular brooch

This type of brooch forms a circle with a central hole, so that the pin is visible. Sometimes these brooches are flat and sometimes circular.

They often had some form of simple decoration around the edge. This brooch (AN1909.428) which was found at West Stow in Suffolk, has simple ring decoration with straight lines, but has no decoration on the back (see picture below)

Annular brooches were used from the late fifth to seventh centuries. They became increasingly common over time and are mainly associated with Anglian areas in the east and north-east of the country.
